FEEDBACK for PRINCESS
-------------------------------------------------------
"I started reading the beginning of "PRINCESS, A True Story of
Life Behind
the Veil in Saudi Arabia," which is great and I will finish it!
Keep up the
great work!" --Suzy
------------------------------------------------------
"Like so many others have done...I thank you for providing this
book club. I
so look forward to the daily reads. And naturally, some are more
appealing
than others. Today, I went back to a previous weeks reads and
read
Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia
by Jean
Sasson. This book has truly caught my interest and I can hardly
wait to
continue
reading....so I just called my local library and I'm picking it
up tonight.
Guess I'm just too impatient to wait for mailing. Thank you
again for
expanding my reading choices. Like this one, there have been
others that I
found to be great reads thru your book club that I would have
probably never
discovered had it not been for
your presentation. Thanks again from A very happy reader."
--Tricia
-------------------------------------------------------
"I'm starting my third week with Chapter A Day, and I must say
your sharing
the excerpts with your readers is a great idea. I read Jean
Sasson's
excerpt from last week. I'd read a book by her before, and when
I looked up
"Princess" in the library, I realized that indeed was the book I
read
before... anyways, it made me want to read the sequel, Princess
Sultana's
Daughters, so I picked up
that book to read. I've barely started it, but it seems just as
intriguing..
Anyways, I've enjoyed reading the daily emails. Keep up the good
work." --Shuva
-------------------------------------------------------
"I must admit that last week's book, Princess, got me so
intrigued that I
rushed down to the library to pick up the book. I had to find
out what
happened to poor Sara's arranged marriage. Needless to say, this
is not the
first time that I've had to do this thanks to your varied
selections.
Somehow a trip to the library still does not
stop me from buying new books as well. So now, I must get back
to my book
'puddles'. Keep up the good works...& books." --Jan
-------------------------------------------------------
"I'm so disappointed to have finished reading this week's
selection,
Princess. It is fascinating and I will definitely get it from
the
library. What a great look behind the scenes at a culture so
different from
our own.
Keep up the good work." --Betty
-------------------------------------------------------
"What a great selection for your book club. I couldn't wait for
each new
chapter and I've placed a copy on hold. Thanks again!" --Poulin
-------------------------------------------------------
"I have already reserved this book at our public library."--June
-------------------------------------------------------
"I just wanted to drop you an email and let you know that I am
enjoying The
Big Gamble and PRINCESS A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in
Saudi Arabia
book this week and plan on reading both to completion. Over the
last month I
have decided to finish several of the books that you have
suggested. Thank
you for opening my eyes to new authors and writing styles."
--Melissa
-------------------------------------------------------
"This book "The Veil" by Jean Sasson is a MUST READ. I fully
intend to get
it." --Beverly
-------------------------------------------------------
"What can I say about "Veil"? I thought I knew what life is like
for those
women but not so. Had no idea how horrible and demeaning and
cruel that
culture is for them. The book is absolutely spellbinding! It
takes me
there involves me in doing, seeing, feeling every experience.
Never thought
I'd enjoy reading a book on
the computer but this one has caught me and won't let go! Of
course I have
to read the whole book. It's terrific. Thank you so much for
bringing it
to me." --Mabel
------------------------------------------------------
...I find Princess fascinating and so far unbelievably sad. I
plan on
getting that book also. As I said my book purchases have been
approaching the
national debt, but what better way to spend it? Thank you, I've
enjoyed my
read time." --Betty
-------------------------------------------------------
"This book is so interesting. I'll be finishing it sometime
soon. This'll
sound bad, but I hope something awful happens to Ali and he gets
what he
deserves!..." --Erin
-------------------------------------------------------
"Very interesting as well as well written. I plan to read the
rest of the
book too." --Irene
-------------------------------------------------------
"My Book Club read PRINCESS in the fall of 1997 and also read
the two
sequels to PRINCESS. A very good read and since 9/11 we have all
gone back
and talked about it." --Barbara
------------------------------------------------------
"I read this book, "Princess" and couldn't put the
book down - it was so unbelievable and scary!! To think what
these women go
through. . .there are no words. . ." --Anita
-------------------------------------------------------
"I am very interested in this book because it is a true story.
My daughter
Paula was in the Air Force for 24 years and during the Gulf War
was
stationed for 17 months in Turkey. She was horrified at the way
Arab women
have to live." --Ellen
-------------------------------------------------------
"Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Fascinating. Thank
you." --Martha
-------------------------------------------------------
"This book (behind the veil) has been really interesting. I did
not expect
to enjoy it, but I have. I've also enjoyed the fiction book this
week, even
though I considered not bothering after the first day. I'm glad
I stuck with
it.
Thanks again for this innovative and fun approach to reading."
Chris

I want to finish reading PRINCESS by Jean Sasson (and I don't
often read
non-fiction books!). But you do pick some good ones! Thank you
for the
reads." --Donna
-------------------------------------------------------
"I am enjoying "The Veil". Another book I have added to my
list." --Bob
-------------------------------------------------------
":I cannot wait for the next installment of the "Veil"! Keep up
the good
work." --Edward P.
-------------------------------------------------------
"It was so nice to see Ms. Sasson's book on the internet. She is
such a
wonderful writer. I have read all of her books." --Donna
-------------------------------------------------------
"This is an extraordinary story and I can't wait to check out
the book! Your
Chapter-A-Day program is an excellent way to introduce books
that we may not
normally think to read. Thank you very much for the
introduction!" --Nina
-------------------------------------------------------
"The Princess" has me hooked. Sampling your selections beats
going to the
library and looking at the book covers, reading the blurbs and
trying to
decide hurriedly what is really worth checking out. Also, when
first I
think a book you've selected is not for me, reading the first
few chapters
often changes my mind. I'm so glad a friend told me of your
site." --Mary
-------------------------------------------------------
"This one promises to be a real page turner for me." --Bev
-------------------------------------------------------
"Greetings: The choice of book for this week comes to me as a
pleasant
surprise. I managed a dairy for the Royal Family at Al Kharj and
Dammam in
the period 1953-1955. The experience of teaching Bedouin boys,
about 15
years old, hoe, to care for the cattle, the milking machines,
the
pasteurizer, cream separators, etc was a wonderful experience
for me." --Jim
-------------------------------------------------------
"This weeks book makes me realize how lucky we are . It is hard
to believe
that in this day and age that women are still treated so badly."
--Linda
-------------------------------------------------------
"i completely agree with you! i find myself wincing while
reading this, but
i find that it makes me very aware of how great our country
really can be.
looking forward to reading more..." --branwyn
-------------------------------------------------------
"I find this a very revealing book. However, I would caution
readers to know
that Saudi society does not reflect their religion. Islam is a
beautiful
religion, despite the corrupted social practices and fanatics I
would
encourage readers to speak with their Muslim neighbors or visit
the local
Bridgeview mosque for clarification
into "hot topics" mentioned in this book. Often times, they are
blown out of
proportion. In any case, this book really makes you grateful for
all the
blessings in your life." --Dina
-------------------------------------------------------
What an interesting peak into a fascinating yet mysterious
culture." --Star
-------------------------------------------------------
"This book has renewed my interest in the culture of the Middle
East and
the status of its women. I am fortunate to have as a friend a
young woman
from Iraq who came to this country and our city as a political
refugee,
sponsored by our church. She and her two
daughters had been living in a relocation camp in Syria for two
years
while her husband was imprisoned and tortured by Saddam Hussein
(in an
attempt to learn where his brother's resistance movement was
hiding out).
Eventually the husband was let go, and he walked hundreds of
miles across
the country to get to them. With the help of "underground"
friends, they
packed clothes and a few other belongings and walked over the
mountains to
safety! Even with the obvious devotion shown by her husband, the
history of
their relationship could not be overcome -- it had been an
arranged
marriage (she was 15, he was in his early 30s) -- and within 18
months of
being here she had filed for a divorce. Both were highly
educated -- her
engineering degree probably made her bid for independence
possible, whereas
most wives of educated Iraqi men
would not have this going for them." --Suzie
-------------------------------------------------------
"I recently read a sequel by Jean Sasson, Princess Sultana's
Daughters. I
enjoyed that book as well as the first one. I notice in her
comments, Ms
Sasson mentions 2 sequels, so I'll be looking for the other one
as
well." --Sheri
-------------------------------------------------------
""Princess" is mesmerizing; especially in the way Saudi Arabian
culture
contradicts the dictates of western child rearing. Isn't it
interesting that
Muslims in the U.S. cannot follow the dictates described in the
book
(restricted education, arranged marriages) but still believe
they are
practicing their religion." --Craig
